New centre helps patients to stay connected

Wednesday 12th March, 2025

St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital has officially opened its new Wellness Centre and Day Rehabilitation Program.

Housed at the private hospital's new purpose-built clinic, the program offers comprehensive rehabilitation for patients both pre- and post-recovery from surgery, injury, or illness.

St Andrew's Toowoomba CEO Linda Jorgensen said the program played a crucial role in supporting cancer, orthopaedic, cardiac, and surgical patients.

"We are corralling our resources, skills and support services to offer more structured multidisciplinary pre- and post-treatment care," she said.

"Evidence shows that pre- and post-event rehabilitation leads to better outcomes.

"It helps improve physical function, manage both physical and mental wellbeing side-effects of treatment and ultimately, enhance overall quality of life."

Up to 25 patients a day are using the rehab program, and these numbers are expected to grow.

The multidisciplinary team offers physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, speech pathology, social work and exercise physiology.

Individualised programs will help patients restore functionality, rebuild exercise tolerance, and improve endurance through structured interventions.

"It's simple – the new program is about empowering patients to regain their independence and to improve their overall quality of life," Ms Jorgensen said.

"This new offering brings together all our services in a holistic approach, all with the convenience of a day program.

"Another advantage is the ability for patients to receive care close to home. By staying local, they can enjoy greater comfort and convenience while recovering.

"This not only reduces the burden on families but also allows patients to maintain stronger connections with loved ones during this crucial phase."

Ms Jorgensen said the program further cemented the Darling Downs regional hospital's dedication to a patient-centred approach.

"Our commitment to delivering outstanding medical care remains strong, guided by our values and dedication to improving health outcomes for Toowoomba and Southwest Queensland residents," she said.
