Amy Ryan - Parramatta Eye Centre

Thursday 10th April, 2025

Amy Ryan, 32, has been a Co-ordinator at Parramatta Eye Centre's Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) for three years, having worked there for eight years overall.

What's the best part about your job?

Knowing the importance of my role, even though it goes under the radar.

What is something about your job that not many people know about, and what would surprise other people about working in a private hospital?

That CSSD exists in general. A lot of people don't know about CSSD or the important role it plays within a hospital.

I think people would be surprised about the friendship you create with doctors. A running joke at my work currently is that I regularly share my box of Weetabix with Associate Professor Chandra Bala, and every year without question he mentions it in my Christmas card.

What do you love about working in a private hospital

The work/life balance.

What do you like to do outside of work and/or what is something your colleagues don't know about you?

I'm an avid solo multi-day hiker and rock and fossil collector. I have hiked over 1,000 kilometres solo, and I plan to hike all the 11 Great Walks of New Zealand by 2028. I have currently completed two.

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?

You should treat your job like your own business, the amount of time and effort you put in is what you will get in return.
