PPHDRAS Public Reports

Since 2001 the Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA) has produced the Private Psychiatric Hospitals Data Reporting and Analysis Service (PPHDRAS), collecting in-depth information on trends, developments and delivery of acute mental health by private hospitals.

The development, preparation and distribution of this report is undertaken by the APHA in conjunction with the Federal Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, and forms an important part of the sector's obligations to stakeholders, including the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, who rely on the data collected.

Participation in the services provided by the PPHDRAS provides hospitals with an effective and efficient mechanism to:

Answer the questions: "Who receives what services from our hospital(s), at what cost, and with what effect?"
Assure consumers, carers and government that the hospitals are providing safe and effective services.
Assure payers that hospitals are efficiently providing effective services to their members or clients and to consumers in general.
Assists hospitals in their efforts to continuously improve the quality, safety and effectiveness of the services provided.

The PPHDRAS was established as the Centralised Data Management Service of the Strategic Planning Group for Private Psychiatric Services. At that time, private hospitals were under considerable pressure from health insurers whose openly stated opinion was that psychiatric care was ineffective and, in any case, was only provided to the 'worried well'.
