Comprehensive cancer care has arrived on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula with the official opening of a new clinic at The Bays Hospital.
The private not-for-profit facility's Cancer Care Centre will be the first in the region to offer radiation therapy, in partnership with Icon Group.
It will offer a wide range of services all under one roof, including the latest in diagnostic, treatment and support services, with an integrated approach focused on personalised care for patients and their families.
Mornington Peninsula's median age is above the state average, and there are expected to be nearly 30,000 patient admissions for cancer or haematological diagnosis in the region by 2032.
"Today marks the culmination of years of planning and dedication to enhancing cancer care in our region," The Bays Healthcare Group CEO Jade Phelan said at the launch onMonday 3 February 2025.
"The Bays Cancer Care Centre is more than just a building – it's a commitment to providing accessible, compassionate cancer treatment and support for our local community, right here at home."
The hospital's new centre was officially opened by Flinders MP Zoe McKenzie and her predecessor Greg Hunt, former Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care.
Icon Group CEO Mark Middleton also attended, with guests given a tour of the new radiation therapy department.
Icon Cancer Centre at The Bays is the first radiation oncology service in the Mornington Peninsula Shire, providing the latest technology and techniques for all cancer types.
It is led by experienced local radiation oncologists Dr David Blakey and Dr Maree Sexton.
The Bays Cancer Care Centre also features a range of services designed to complement traditional medical care, addressing the physical, emotional, and mental needs of patients.
Key features include:
- Integrated multidisciplinary team of oncologists, nurses, and allied health professionals working collaboratively for the best patient outcomes;
- Advanced technologies including HyperArc for brain cancer, stereotactic radiation therapy for precision treatment of small tumours, and tattoo-less radiation therapy;
- Dedicated onsite radiation therapy planning CT scanner, allowing patients to have their planning sessions and treatment in one location;
- Wellness Centre providing access to onsite Breast Care Specialist Nurses and Prostate Care Specialist Nurses, support groups, yoga and art therapy, nutritional advice and a mobile wig library;
- Free onsite parking.
The Cancer Care Centre received $10 million in Federal funding, while Community Bank Mount Martha financed its Wellness Centre.
"At a critical moment in 2022, when the funding was in the balance, Zoe stepped in, re-secured it, and that's made all the difference," Mr Hunt said.
"And this will make all the difference for so many families on the Mornington Peninsula."
