Tibetan Monk is able to hear again

A Gyuto Monk of Tibet has had his hearing restored, thanks to the generosity of doctors and staff at Hollywood Private Hospital (Hollywood).

The monk – Pema Wangyal – was touring Western Australia as part of a cultural exchange when fate brought him into contact with ear, nose and throat surgeon Dr Stephen Rodrigues.

Mr Pema Wangyal had hearing surgery in India 20 years ago, but remained profoundly deaf in his left ear.

Dr Rodrigues said with some financial assistance surgery would help restore Mr Pema Wangyal’s hearing.

Mr Pema Wangyal underwent an operation 20 years ago in India to fix his hearing, but remained profoundly deaf in his left ear.

“Hollywood is renowned in the Western Australian medical community for its generosity and within a week of me seeking its assistance to help Pema, the hospital was on board and Pema was booked in for surgery,” Dr Rodrigues said.

Working in collaboration, Hollywood and Dr Rodrigues donated their services and expertise to help restore Mr Pema Wangyal’s hearing.

Hollywood Chief Executive Officer, Peter Mott, said Ramsay Health Care’s motto is ‘People caring for people’ and it is embraced by our employees, volunteers and doctors.

“It is wonderful for us to be able to assist someone like Pema who is committed to helping and caring for others through his teachings,” said Mr Mott.
