A patient in the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region was the first in the area to undergo reconstructive bowel surgery last month.
St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital Colorectal Surgeon, Dr Scott Mansfield headed the surgical team and was joined by Dr Anil Keshava, a colorectal surgeon who performs this type of surgery in Sydney.
Known as “the pouch surgery” it retains or restores the functionality of the anus. This means patients who before would have been fitted with a colostomy bag can resume normal functions and improved quality of life.
Dr Mansfield wants to bring the surgery to more Toowoomba patients, who need to have their entire colon and rectum removed because of conditions like inflammation in the digestive tract and occasionally colon cancer.
“I am hoping with mentorship from Dr Keshava, that I will start to provide the service locally on a regular basis and avoid patients having to travel to Brisbane and beyond for their surgery,” Dr Mansfield said.
St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital CEO, Ray Fairweather said advanced surgical procedures are the way of the future and St Andrew’s prides itself on leading the way in health care.
“We have made significant investments in new theatres and equipment over the past few years to ensure that patients in the region receive the very latest surgical treatment available.
“This is an extremely exciting move forward for medical treatment in regional Australia. Medical care is going from strength to strength in Toowoomba, with exceptional doctors and facilities available on our doorstep,” said Mr Fairweather.
