New technology eliminates painful commute for Sunshine Coast residents

Sunshine Coast residents who require back or spinal procedures no longer have to travel to Brisbane for surgery thanks to the arrival of new technology at The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital.

The UnitingCare Health facility has invested in the cutting-edge StealthStation Surgical navigation system to assist its surgeons in performing delicate procedures.

The new technology provides surgeons with the ability to navigate a 3D map of the body part undergoing surgery, eliminating the guesswork from the procedure.

As computer-assisted surgery can be less invasive than other procedures, the technology may result in reduced operating and recovery times.

Neurosurgeon Dr Janusz Bonkowski said the technology was a huge step forward in patient care at the hospital.

“I am happy to be able to offer this procedure to our community and give people the choice of having back or spinal surgery right here on the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

“I have been performing these procedures at Brisbane hospitals for many years with excellent results and it is fantastic that I can now offer local patients the ability to seek their treatment close to their home and support networks.”

Adriana Leonardi, the hospital’s acting general manager, said the hospital serviced a large and growing regional area and residents needed to have access to the sophisticated services available in bigger cities.

“The introduction of these breakthrough back and spinal procedures complement the hospital’s wide range of surgical services…,” she said.
