New digital mental health service

A new online site has been developed for Australians to help take control of their mental health.

The Federal Minister for Health, Greg Hunt launched the new Head to Health site that provides digital support and information to those suffering from mental illnesses, in a way that feels comfortable for them and can complement face-to-face therapies.

“Evidence shows that for many people, digital interventions can be as effective as face-to-face services.

“Head to Health provides services and resources delivered by some of Australia’s most trusted mental health service providers.

“They include free or low-cost apps, online support communities, online courses and phone services.

“The Turnbull Government supports the need for a long term shift in mental health care towards early intervention, and the Head to Health gateway will help with this,” said Mr Hunt.

The announcement comes at the start of Mental Health Week, which runs from Sunday 8 October 2017 through to Saturday 14 October 2017. There are a number of initiatives underway across Australia to promote the week, for example, private hospitals around Australia are again hosting a herd of inflatable elephants to draw attention to the Elephant in the Room – mental health.

Mental Health Australia are focussing on further reducing stigma and promoting a positive approach to tackling mental health with their ‘Do you see what I see?’ mental health promise for the week this year.

Mental Health Australia CEO Frank Quinlan said stigma is still the number one barrier to people seeking help.

“We need to see tackling stigma around mental health as a way to improve the health of the nation, improve productivity, improve our community engagement, and improve our quality of life.

“Yes we’ve come a long way to challenge and change perceptions, and paved the way for many to tell their story, but there is still great stigma associated with mental illness,” said Mr Quinlan.
