How one plan became reality

From an unfinished work plan to being nominated for Australia’s Local Hero in the 2017 Australian of the Year Awards, Vicki Jellie made her husband’s plan a reality.

Vicki Jellie founded Peter’s Project, after finding her late husband, Peter's, fundraising plans in his briefcase the day after his death. Mr Jellie spent several months travelling to Melbourne from Warrnambool for cancer treatments, a distance of 700km round trip.

Ms Jellie began advocating for Peter’s Project in 2009 and by May 2014 she raised $5 million from the community, and then received $25 million of State and Federal Government funding.

Epworth HealthCare manage the centre and its radiotherapy services after they were announced as the successful bidder to build and operate the facility in 2014, with the centre officially opened on Saturday 16 July 2016.

The winner of Australia's Local Hero will be announced on Wednesday 25 January 2017, along with the Australian of the Year.
