Day surgery patients in Sydney’s south will have a calming new environment available to them with the opening of Forest Road Day Surgery in Hurstville.
The purpose-built day surgery facility has been designed to deliver a seamless patient flow, with a little bit of zen thrown in as well.
National Director of Nursing, Sharon McIntyre, said the facilities were world class.
“We consulted with patients to understand how we could enhance their experience with us,” she said.
“Something that’s really important to patients and their carers is a calm waiting area, so we’ve used special acoustic treatments to ensure the waiting room is quiet.
“We have free Wi-Fi available for added comfort and convenience. Even the colour scheme, furniture and patient trolleys were selected after patient feedback," she said.
Ophthalmic surgeon Dr Tess Huynh said the support services available to her patients were important.
“I know that my patients are very comfortable and well looked after, from admission to discharge, by a highly capable and friendly administrative and theatre team,” Dr Huynh said.
“The in-house management of surgical lists and other logistics means that I get to focus on my surgeries, with efficient turnaround times allowing me to treat more patients.”
And it is not just the patients who should be happy, with top surgeons also consulted during the design process Ms McIntyre said.
“We worked very closely with surgeons to ensure that all the features facilitate best surgical practice. We’ve focused on creating a seamless patient flow, with a dedicated pre-operative area for patients and two-stage recovery bays.
“There is also a central sterile services department to ensure rigorous quality standards for sterility.”
The centre is managed by Vision Eye Institute, who currently operate seven other day surgeries and 16 ophthalmic clinics throughout Australia. Vision Eye Institute’s Hurstville clinic is also located at the new day surgery.
Dr Patrick Versace, one of Sydney’s leading laser eye surgeons, said the laser suite was one of the stand-out features of the facility.
“I can access the latest laser technology for refractive and cataract surgery, with an operating theatre environment that facilitates the use of premium lenses. The fit-out is of the highest quality with state-of-the-art equipment,” Dr Versace said.
“I know that my patients in the Hurstville area are thrilled that they don’t have to choose between state-of-the-art surgical premises and proximity to home – they can now have both.’’
Forest Road Day Surgery can accommodate a variety of surgical specialties and session frequencies.
“Our spacious theatre is fully equipped for ophthalmic surgical procedures and we can also cater for similar surgical specialties,” general manager and Director of Nursing, Carmel Kennedy, said. “We operate on a four-week theatre roster, which gives our surgeons flexible session frequency. We also offer designated car spaces, on-site change-rooms and lockers.”
