Easing the burden for rural patients

St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital is offering a service aiming to ease the burden on rural patients trying to access specialist treatment.

Rural Health Connect helps rural patients coordinate appointments, travel, accommodation needs and ensures they are seen in the shortest amount of time when they visit Brisbane to see specialists, all with the help of a dedicated co-ordinator.

Dr Merryn Thomae, who consults on the Heart of Australia truck and was involved with the Rural Health Connect pilot program earlier this year, said patients seen on the truck can now access a range of specialists in one trip to Brisbane.

“My referral process is simplified by using Rural Health Connect as the central point of contact and my patients feel secure in knowing that they will receive the coordinated approach to making appointments, planning their transport, accommodation and escort needs.

“In short, this new service offers my patient a much less stressful journey to the city and better health outcomes,” Dr Thomae said.
