Cairns nurse recognised for her contribution to the ‘evolution’ of maternity care

Cairns Private Hospital’s ‘midwifery innovator’ has been nominated for the coveted Nurse or Midwife of the Year distinction at the annual HESTA Australian Nursing and Midwifery Awards.

Deanna Ward, a nationally recognised speaker, researcher and endorsed midwifery clinician has been recognised for her work developing and implementing the innovative Know Your Midwife (KYM) program, which offers holistic, personalised care for mothers-to-be.

“I’m very honoured to be nominated and it has only been made possible thanks to our dedicated midwives and the mums in Cairns really supporting the program,” said Ms Ward.

The KYM program is the first of its kind in the private health care sector and focuses on continuity-of-care for new mothers.

Through the program, patients are able to choose their midwife and obstetrician at the start of their pregnancy and receive assurance that they will remain the same throughout, allowing them to form meaningful and trusted relationships with their carers.

It is a transformative program Ms Ward hopes will help change the face of maternity care in Australian hospitals.

”Ramsay have been extremely supportive throughout the process,” said Ms Ward, who is training midwives at Ramsay Health Care hospitals across the country, with the aim of broadening the program’s reach.
