A new online tool prepares patients to get the most out of their medical appointments, suggesting a range of questions to ask their doctor.
Question Builder was developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) and Healthdirect Australia to improve patients’ engagement with their health care.
Commission Chief Executive Officer, Adjunct Professor Debora Picone AM, said research showed patients want to be better informed and more involved in health care decisions.
“We know that time with a doctor is precious and Question Builder will help people make the most of it by coming to their medical appointment with questions they have regarding their care.
“The best health care decisions are made when patients and health care practitioners make informed decisions together,” said A/Prof Picone.
The tool guides patients through a number of questions about their planned medical appointment, eventually suggesting a list of questions, in priority order, that can be printed out and taken along to the appointment.
Question Builder has been adapted for the Australian health care context, from a tool developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality based in the United States.
Question Builder is available on the healthdirect website.
